Thanks for giving us a venue for stabbing our fellow gamers with bayonets, stealing their intelligence and bombing the shit out of them using Alpha Aurora Bombers.
My main suggestions for your next event are:
Maybe instead of trying to sqeeze in so many tournaments, just have a "game of the hour." For instance,
1pm COD4
3pm CS:S
5pm TF2
Then, there is no pressure for events, and just have the appropriate server running during that time with a big announcement of which game to play. Without games being "official" it seems we were left trying to get people into the same game at the same time, and of course there were plenty of "oh I don't have that" or "I don't want to play that." If it were an "official game" then maybe more people would be playing, and I find that I have more fun just playing the same game with a bunch of people.
Seems like pre-paid were 100% more likely to show up. Maybe have a bigger division of price between pre-paid and at-the-door to encourage pre-pays? For instance, make it $20 pre-paid, and $35 at-the-door. I think that way you'll pretty much know that the majority of at-the-door probably won't show up so you can pretty much just set up enough spaces for pre-pays and a handful more spots. Dunno, getting people to stop being lazy and actually show up can be a challenge, so GLHF next time.
Take these suggestions as constructive criticism. At the end of the day (ahem, early in the morning) I have a vague sensation of having been to a fun event and for some reason needing around 20 hours of sleep. I know I would definately go to another NoG event if the chance presented itself and I wasn't already previously engaged with another event (ProfessorKhaos, we're all looking at you ).
It was awesome to see some people really taking a swing at the Midwest LAN party scene. I would love to see this crew evolve and grow over time. Wisconsin's scene can only grow.
Zap raises some excellent suggestions and I agree with them. With what appeared to be a very full tournament schedule I think most people were focused on what ever game they thought they could do well in, which segmented the player base. It was awesome once the team fortress game appeared out of no where. Focus is good! Me (Big Monitor/Eyefinity) and my Brother (little Monitor) had a great time once we were all fragging and screaming at the people around us.
I think the most important thing to make sure we have squared away for the next event is going to be having a more solid internet solution. Talking with the staff I know that you guys almost had another solution in place and its a bummer it didn't work out, but especially with the 'no-lan' trending (BC2, SC2, ect...) this will only become more important as time goes on.
AGAIN, Awesome job by all that put on the event! I am sure big monitor and little monitor will be back for more.
Well there a lot of things I could say about this LAN, some bad, but most good, and as Zap said, please take this as constructive criticism.
With that said, here is my take on the event:
Space/seating: "A+"
Staff Hospitality: "A+"
Raffles, Prizes/Swag: "A+" for the first event under new management (Sponsors are hard to impress, thrust me I know) The next event should be better based on the success of this one)
Schedule/Agenda Management: "B" This is the main area I would have liked to have seen more effort/authority on. It seemed like most of the night everyone just did whatever. Some "gentle" persuasion to get everyone in the same games would have been very welcomed.
Power: "C" Sorry, GGM, but it sucked that we lost power 3 time at our table. The good thing is that you guys very quickly fixed it once the circuits were figured out.
Network: A big "A+" for all Jizzabit Linksys/Cisco goodness, not one LAN issue (as long as the switches had power...lol)
Internet/Bandwidth: "D" Sorry again GGM, but the only reason it was not an "F" is because I could eventually authenticate Steam.
To be fair, I do know you are working on this, and your plan sounds like an awesome one, hope you get it worked out.
Getting to raise hell with my Phoenix peeps: Absolutely Priceless
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, FOR MAKING THAT POSSIBLE! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Overall rating of this LAN: "A"
I will definitely attend the next NoG event, unless otherwise obligated.
My only complaint was that we did not get around to the actual tournaments. I spent 10 hours, for instance, on dawn of war, practicing with a practice partner, refining build orders, etc, only to have not played it at all.
There are so many good things that happened at nog though, it is just easier to point out the only bad part rather than every good part.
